22 The Official Daily Tag 2 – Mittwoch 16 November 2022 Power Supplies impact of the improving economic conditions in recent weeks “how this will continue in 2023 24 we still have to see ” For power supply distributors dedicated exclusively to projectbased business the situation is somewhat different “We never really had a classic warehouse in the past either ” explains Andreas Hanausek Product Marketing Applications Active Components at Codico “We had a small warehouse to sell samples or sometimes to help us manufacture small series ” Instead he says their main business is now projectrelated where Codico acts as a logistics intermediary between the manufacturer and the customer to ensure the smoothest possible movement of goods between the two sides Of course only what is available can be delivered smoothly through this channel as well “In the past we hardly ever had a free stock of power supplies ” confirms Jens Egbers FAE team manager at MEV Elektronik Service Aclassic warehouse was only maintained for the configurable power supplies that MEV sells But even this warehouse is now empty – “what comes in and what we configure ourselves is installed after a week and on its way to the customer But power supply distributors are not only struggling with significantly reduced inventories they also have to deal with a change in behavior on behalf of their customers “While we are pleased to see that the situation is slowly improving ” says Thomas Merkel Product Marketing Manager at Hy-Line Power Components describing the change “a lot of customer resources are still tied up in ensuring that production is up and running ” For power supply distributors that means they are increasingly entering projects as problem solvers presenting customers with alternatives to bridge the short term “Idon’t want to say we’ve gone from being a designin to a redesign partner but it’s not a trend that can be completely dismissed ” “We are now much more in a reaction mode than we used to be ” is also the impression of Jens Egbers “Because of the many problems with existing projects it happens time and again in many discussions is that new projects which we actually wanted to talk about with the customer fall by the wayside There are simply too many things to fix along the way and instead of really developing new projects the company focuses its efforts on redesigns Under the influence of disruptions in the supply chains many customers are now working with significantly longer planning horizons than in the past after all they were equally urged to do the same thing by their power supply specialists at the start of the Corona pandemic It is therefore not surprising that manufacturers and distributors in the power supply sector are now quoting planning timeframes for their customers that are often between one and two years As a result both power supply manufacturers and distributors have full order books In view of rapidly changing economic conditions however the question ultimately arises as to how healthy and resilient this order level is “If a slump really does come as many people expect ” says Egbers “it will be really interesting because there are customers who have planned ahead and ordered until 2024 ” eg ❚ Sales and order development for power supplies remain at a high level In no way is this a normal situation There are still no signs of a downturn or even a significant flattening of demand in the power supply sector For customers this means that long delivery times are likely to continue into 2023 and there will probably be no price stability next year either At present neither the overall sales trend nor the order intake of individual companies in the power supply market give any indication that delivery times component supply or even shipping rates could change in the near future “Based on the period from January to September our incoming orders increased by 60 percent compared to the previous year ” reports Sebastian Fischer Managing Director of Traco Electronic “During the same period we were also able to increase our sales by 45 percent compared to the previous year ” “So far we have not seen any fundamental change in demand planning from our customers ” says Hermann Püthe Managing Director of inpotron Schaltnetzteile “which to be honest surprises us a little in a positive sense at the moment “ Püthe is also somewhat surprised by the uninterrupted willingness of customers to initiate new projects “Order intake is correspondingly high” Of course in discussions with business partners the inpotron boss realizes that all expenditures are being reconsidered due to the changing economic conditions Something else that has not escaped Fischer’s attention “Apart from the pure figures we naturally also sense the uncertainty and tension in the market in view of political and economic developments in our discussions with our customers ” After all he says there can be hardly anyone who does not expect a recession “The big question is When will it really start and how deep will it be?” - “We know from our discussions with customers and from published economic data that the business climate has softened noticeably in recent weeks ” confirms Gustav Erl General Manager TDK-Lambda Germany “but it is also impossible to react adequately within such short time frames” According to Karsten Bier CEO of Recom there have definitely been changes in recent weeks “we are seeing more pushouts of deliveries” The supply chain in his view “is still disrupted there has been no visible improvement yet ” What is striking to him however is that there has been a noticeable increase in inquiries for no-China products in recent weeks and months Looking at the anticipated development for next year he speaks of “a continuation of the roller coaster ride of the recent past ” Bier expects moderate growth in order intake for Recom 2023 “However international trade barriers and Covid policies remain the biggest risks to the development of the international power supply market in 2023 ” Based on feedback received from his customers so far Püthe expects “further growth in 2023 although it will be slower than this year” He attributes this to continuing advances in digitization which he believes is a trend that cannot be stopped and the fact that the shortage of skilled workers is continuing to drive companies towards automation “Iwould assume that building installation with systems technology will continue to grow in 2023 Idon’t expect a downturn in this area any time before the end of next year ” Although the market situation is likely to remain volatile throughout 2023 Erl is optimistic about business development during the coming year “Ultimately we expect a normalization of the market a development which will be driven by an improvement in availability and the associated reduction in delivery times He attributes the expectation that TDK-Lambda will benefit greatly from this development in the European market to its “strong and versatile product range part of which we will be further expanding here at electronica with a series of new launches ” For him this is the basis for strong positioning and further solid growth for TDK-Lambda in both existing and new markets The following statements underline that the current situation in the area of power supply distribution is still highly unusual “We are still far far from normal ” asserts Frank Stocker Field Application Engineer Power Supplies at Schukat electronic Specifically he speaks of an inventory shortage in the power supply sector of 30 to 40 percent “It’s simply the case that we’re still not getting enough product to replenish our stocks to 100 percent ” He does not believe that this will change any time soon even under the Hermann Püthe inpotron Schaltnetzteile “We are pleasantly surprised to observe no changes in our customers’ 2023 demand plans so far ” Sebastian Fischer Traco Power “We have grown our market share in Germany over the past two years but we expect order intake to decline next year ” Frank Stocker Schukat electronic “Our power supply inventory is about 30 to 40 percent understocked But we’re not getting enough product to replenish our stock to 100 percent ” Traco Electronic Hall A4 Booth 424 inpotron Schaltnetzteile Hall A4 Booth 425 TDK-Lambda Hall
