14 The Official Daily Tag 4 – Freitag 15 November 2024 Connectors and Cables ❚ An increasing number of possible applications SPE is becoming relevant for many industries How quickly will Single Pair Ethernet SPE become established? And for which applications is the technology now becoming interesting? SPE experts explain what the current state of the art is and what great market potential the technology can develop Switching from fouror eightwire cabling to twowire cabling is a true technological advance Not only can space weight installation effort and costs be reduced but continuous Ethernetbased communication – right down to the smallest devices such as sensors and actuators – can also be realized While the concept of twowire cabling is already firmly established in the automotive industry the aim now is to also bring Single Pair Ethernet into automation applications building automation and other sectors “The number of companies dealing with SPE is growing rapidly ” reports Thomas Keller Product Manager at Rosenberger Two or three years ago it was only cable and connector manufacturers who presented their products but in the meantime many companies from different sectors are showing their SPE developments The range of products has grown enormously “Now is the time for end customers to convert their new product developments to SPE or to plan with SPE because the technology is on a solid path and will become increasingly important in the coming years ” Keller is convinced The interesting thing is “As more companies become familiar with Single Pair Ethernet the more fields of application will be defined ” The range of applications is growing Tim Kindermann Senior Specialist Single Pair Ethernet at Phoenix Contact has made similar observations “The technology is becoming increasingly interesting for new areas of application and markets In the past we have increasingly focused on industrial applications but we are now seeing growing interest from many new markets ” Kindermann cites the agricultural industry as an example where the intelligent connection of SPE sensors can create real added value for modern agriculture “It is worth thinking outside the box as the requirements of intelligent communication systems are similar in almost all markets and areas of application ” says Kindermann The increasing collection and evaluation of data is becoming increasingly important in many areas Kindermann describes the role of Single Pair Ethernet for sector coupling in the All Electric Society as the “missing piece of the puzzle” and a “game changer” Importance of the different protocols It is precisely because the possibilities of Single Pair Ethernet are so farreaching that communication standards with different ranges and data transfer rates play a major role “SPE technology itself today provides a whole range of protocols from 10 Mbit s to 25 Gbit s ” says Matthias Fritsche Senior Expert Ethernet at Harting outlining the current status Especially for the lower speeds much greater ranges are possible compared to standard Ethernet and thus also new applications such as in the process industry In the meantime development continues in order to support a wide range of application scenarios “IEEE 802 3 is currently working on the 100Base-T1L protocol for 100 Mbit s over at least 500 m transmission length When this standard is published next year we expect the first hardware to be available from the end of 2025 ” says Fritsche giving an insight into the activities “This will open up a range of new possibilities in the area of smart infrastructure for example in energy networks and traffic control systems The simultaneous use of the two data lines for power supply and data transmission will result in a multitude of new applications in this area ” explains the SPE expert Is the user ready to implement SPE? It always takes a certain amount of time for a new technology to establish itself on the market SPE is no different which may give the impression that customers are still very cautious However Matthias Fritsche sees it differently “Iwouldn’t say that customers are hesitant They are just thinking very carefully about where this new technology can solve existing problems or whether there are relevant and measurable benefits compared to the effort required to implement this new physical layer ” SPE has great potential in this respect for many mobile applications “The spectrum ranges from railway technology to mobile automation applications such as for agricultural and forestry machinery But driverless transport systems and autonomous robots are also worth mentioning in this regard ” The reason for this is that these applications require high data rates and many connections between sensors drives and controllers often in a small installation space This is why SPE can fully exploit its advantages in terms of space weight and performance “As the applications mentioned are often selfcontained systems integration is easier because these systems are very often developed entirely by the customers themselves ” continues Fritsche Sven Oberschelp Product Manager Industrial Ethernet at Weidmüller also notes that customer interest in the technology is not hesitant but rather high “More and more customers are requesting SPE products for their machines and systems They want to implement the next generation of devices based on this communication technology In the coming years there will therefore be many new products with SPE technology ” says Oberschelp He reports that numerous customers are now adopting the technology and implementing their first designs “However it will still be some time before these devices are officially launched Similar to an iceberg only a small part is currently visible Now that the standards have been defined and the first products are on the market we are in the phase of implementation by end customers We are on the right track Customers are not waiting – development is already underway Just as Ethernet has found its way into almost all areas so too will Single Pair Ethernet penetrate very many areas ” Marco Henkel Vice President Technology Management at Wago also emphasizes Single Pair Ethernet – a milestone in Ethernetbased communication Bi ld Pho en ix Con ta ct Bild Harting
