8 The Official Daily Tag 4 – Freitag 15 November 2024 Microprocessors Software Partnership and Ecosystem Management at Infineon Technologies is convinced that this growth is due largely to the fact that “a flexible supply chain in the automotive industry combined with the benefits of an open source environment in general is an advantage that automotive customers will be looking for in the future The benefits of open source in the software environment are widely known in the industry ” What’s more RISC-Voffers both a very lean and costefficient starting point for future highperformance reliable and scalable controller devices “Infineon as a leader in automotive microcontrollers is committed to advancing this innovative open source technology ” However Schneid also emphasises that in addition to these efforts there are other areas in which Infineon is actively promoting a fastgrowing open standard RISC-Vecosystem together with strategic partners Schneid “Our focus is on meeting the needs of our automotive customers who have invested significant resources in the MCU architectures available today In general the strength and support of a wellcoordinated ecosystem is essential for a successful transition to the new RISC-Varchitecture ” STMicroelectronics recently joined the Quintauris joint venture “because the company is convinced that the RISC-V ISA offers interesting functions that are useful in certain applications” according to the official statement But it also goes on to say “ST uses some RISC-Vcores in some specific embedded applications However they are a minority compared to the Arm cores and the ecosystem which remains ST’s first choice for the STM32 general purpose MCU and automotive MCU roadmaps ” Andreas Mangler Director Strategic Marketing at Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente is convinced that “the need to develop costeffective scalable and customisable processor solutions for different applications - from infotainment and driver assistance systems to autonomous driving functions – plays into RISC-V’s hands” He continues “The automotive industry has always relied on powerful and flexible processor architectures to meet the increasing demands for safety efficiency and connectivity RISC-Voffers the advantage of openness and customisation which allows processors to be tailored precisely to the specific requirements As the automotive industry increasingly relies on specialised semiconductor solutions to implement complex functions such as autonomous driving RISC-Vis a promising alternative to Arm that can offer both cost and efficiency benefits ” Success not limited to automotive The reasons for this success are similar in both the industrial as well as the automotive sectors Krishnakumar KK Ramamoorthi Senior Product Marketing Manager in the FPGA business unit at Microchip Technologies cites two main reasons for the use of RISC-V 1 Adaptability – because this enables Microchip to develop products ‘that are specifically optimised for our target applications be it AI IoT aerospace and defence automotive or industrial automation ’ says Ramamoorthi 2 The rapidly growing ecosystem – this makes it more attractive for companies to adopt RISC-V Kjetil Hølstad Executive Vice President Strategy Product Management at Nordic Semiconductor argues similarly “Nordic has started to develop its own cores based on the open RISC-Vinstruction set architecture The new SoCs the nRF54 series will incorporate both Arm and RISC-Vcores The RISC-Vcore takes over the management and the main functions are performed by the Arm cores In the future Nordic will be able to configure its own Thomas Schneid Infineon Technologies “Our strategic involvement in the Quintauris joint venture along with five other major semiconductor companies is dedicated to advancing the standardisation of an ISA International Standard on Auditing and making RISC-Vmore widely available in the automotive sector ” Krishnakumar KK Ramamoorthi Microchip Technologies “AI is being used in all areas from edge devices to the cloud Open RISC-V ISA provides the necessary flexibility and enables crossplatform innovation and faster growth thanks to compatible tools and applications ” Continued from Page 1 cores to solve problems more efficiently resulting in more flexibility for the customer ” In his view RISC-Vcomplements the Arm processor cores with an opensource architecture for specialised applications “This approach allows developers to customise processors to reduce power consumption which is similar to the way we at Nordic use proprietary wireless protocols to optimise performance RISC-Voffers the opportunity for further innovation especially in lowpower applications ” says Hølstad AI set to boost RISC-V The global analyst Omdia is convinced that AI will prove to be a special stimulus when it comes to the demand for RISC-V “There is no doubt that AI will be one of the biggest drivers for the introduction of RISC-Vin many market segments the efficiency and scalability of RISC-Vis ideally suited for the development of processors to perform AI operations ” Ramamoorthi fully agrees with this statement which is in line with Microchip’s view He even sees a possibility that RISC-Vcould have a certain unifying effect in this market segment due to its countless number of participants ‘”The open ISA of RISC-Vcould be an ideal platform for the rapidly growing AI industry It offers developers the flexibility they need to create innovative solutions ISA and its ecosystem have the potential to play a unifying role by providing crossplatform compatible tools and support that can be used by different companies ” In Ramamoorthi’s opinion the fact that many companies are developing proprietary AI accelerators also confirms the assertion that AI will propel RISC-Vforward “The flexibility of RISC-Vin terms of customisation is a significant advantage that will enable companies to develop highly specialised solutions Companies developing their own AI accelerators can use RISC-Vto design customised systems that meet specific performance and efficiency requirements In addition to this these companies can integrate proprietary AI accelerators into universal RISC-Varchitectures resulting in more efficient and versatile systems ” For its “VectorBlox” AI solution for inhouse FPGAs for example Microchip uses a soft core as the central processing unit How important is the processor core? At the time that Arm began its triumphant advance through the microcontroller market many semiconductor manufacturers more or less discontinued their own developments At that time it was often said that the processor core was no longer a differentiating feature Renesas Electronics decided otherwise explains Daryl Khoo Vice President of Embedded Processing at Renesas “We use proprietary CPUs Arm Cortex CPUs and also RISC-V CPUs which are used in our ASSPs MCUs and MPUs ” He also explains that Renesas continues to offer its RL78 CPU 16-bit and RX CPU 32-bit CISC cores “where the performance matches the target application In other words we definitely believe that the processor core is still a differentiating factor for these target markets ” In conclusion Mangler emphasises “In the context of standard applications the statement that processor cores are no longer a differentiating factor is certainly valid However specialised processor cores are becoming increasingly important especially in the field of AI and machine learning Here the architecture of the processor core actually offers a significant competitive advantage as it can be optimised for specific tasks RISC-Vplays a crucial role in this development because it gives developers the freedom to tailor processor cores to specific applications ” st Infineon Technologies Hall C3 Booth 502 Nordic Semiconductor Hall B4 Booth 439 Renesas Electronics Hall B4 Booth 179 STMicroelectronics Hall C3 Booth 100–102 ❚ Traco Power Open frame power supplies Traco Power displays the new TXN line a series of cost efficient metal enclosed AC DC power supplies of 50 75 and 100 Watt which is designed for industrial applications The TXN is an active replacement of the older TXL TXM and TXH lines and is built on similar design principals to make the transition to the new TXN series as easy as possible With a lowprofile metal case and screw terminal block connection they are easy to install in any equipment The TXN power supplies are completely convection cooled Internal EMC filter high IOisolation and wide temperature range qualify them for numerous industrial applications All models in the TXN line have universal input and comply with the latest industrial standard IEC EN UL 62368-1 European EMC standards and the Low Voltage Directive LVD eg Traco Power Hall A 4 Booth 424
