Daniel Cooley We have come a long way to make the first statement true but we are only scratching the surface on how far we can go with the IoT There are really three main areas for improvement that Isee First embedded devices must adopt realtime operating systems RTOS The cloud cannot interface well with traditional baremetal designs It must interface with operating systems Second the first wave of connected devices took a traditional end product and added connectivity The second wave which is happening today will force a complete redesign of the product itself So many things will have to change For example predictive maintenance is transforming devices that used to be built to last as long as possible Third we need to improve endtoend security between the IoT devices and the cloud Other markets like mobile automotive or PC are far ahead of embedded in this area We have a lot of catching up to do Can consumer and industrial devices use the same underlying technology and silicon or are the requirements too different? Yes they can and in many cases already do Different markets drive different needs but we see them converging in the longrun Consumer may drive peak bandwidth for example Industrial may drive security But then we are seeing end markets adopt technology birthed in other markets For example consumer standards like Matter are adopting security protocols developed for industrial And industrial markets are adopting high datarate technologies like Wi-Fi into their end products The many wireless standards and protocols make it difficult for devices from different manufacturers to talk to each other Do you have any vision of how this can be improved? You are correct At times this can feel like a zoo full of protocols The answer fortunately is starting to happen as big companies and ecosystem drivers are starting to agree on common protocols and standards Take Matter as an example Google Amazon Apple and others are for the first time in agreement about the lower levels of the technology stack Separately Ido not believe we will see a convergence of wireless standards Protocols like Wi-Fi Bluetooth Cellular Thread ZigBee WiSUN and so on will continue to thrive These protocols serve different use cases and need to exist for a reason Even a device like an iPhone has five wireless protocols in it Cellular Wi-Fi Bluetooth NFC and UWB Would you agree that privacy is more important for customers in Europe than in other parts of the world? Europe certainly leads the way but Ibelieve that everyone is going to want a certain level of privacy Ihope that governments around the world take their constituency into consideration when making these critical decisions More and more our lives are governed by access and use of data The technology for enabling high degrees of privacy is already there What impact does the dynamic development of AI have on connected devices? AI is such an interesting topic It is a fundamentally different way of computing different than CPUs or GPUs Ibelieve in 50 years we will look back at machine learning and artificial intelligence as important in our lives as a CPU is today AI in some form will be available in everything even batterypowered devices We are already implementing machine learning algorithms for audio keyword spotting in devices running on coin cell batteries for example Another example is using AI in predictive maintenance where algorithms can spot failures early before catastrophic failure jk Silicon Labs Hall 4A Stand 128 129 Daniel Cooley CTO of Silicon Labs and today‘s keynote speaker explains why we are not at the end of the road for IoT but still at the beginning of a long journey and why many connected devices are due for a redesign Bi ld Silic on La bs
