Meinrad Happacher Computer Automation The Open Industry 4 0 Alliance OI4A is taking a close look at the issue of app stores Ekrem Yigitdöl managing director of the Alliance explains the status quo of the work Mr Yigitdöl the topic of app stores has been an issue in your organization for quite some time The Ekrem Yigitdöl Hilscher for example developed an app store called ‘OI4 Community App-Store’ and received the label ‘Open Industry 4 0 Alliance Community’ from the Open Industry 4 0 Alliance in April 2021 The goal formulated at the time was ‚Soon with the OI4 Community App-Store members of the alliance will have an overarching sales platform for their apps without investment and maintenance costs ‘ What happened to that? First perhaps to prevent a misunderstanding The OI4A did not create its own app store What we did we launched a Marketplace Directory in April 2021 The Marketplace Directory has the first apps listed and more shown as in development Since the announcement of the Marketplace which refers to apps in a similar way to the ‘Gelben Seiten’ it has become apparent that there are many processes to go through here before an app is deemed compliant in the sense of the alliance and can then be made available in a store Our ambition is to make the app stores and IIoT stacks of the companies more usable with each other To this end the Open Industry 4 0 Alliance launched the technical working group ‚Application Management‘ in February 2022 with eight member companies Here as in the other working groups open and interoperable solutions for the app stores of the member companies were initially discussed In November 2021 Hans-Jürgen Hilscher – then still in his role as Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Open Industry 4 0 Alliance – raved that the first compliant apps were already listed in the Alliance‘s Marketplace Directory And he assumed “that we will also find them in the App Store after the planned `Go Live´ of the OI4 Community App Store on February 1 2022” So how is this statement to be understood? As answered in the previous question the OI4A like Hilscher and all other participating member companies relies on identical interfaces and technology standards so vendor lock is prevented here as well This is a community app store initiative In other words end customers of the app stores have their own contractual relationship with the operators of these For the scaling of the app stores the industry apps and also the OI4A development guidelines at the level of the edge as well as the cloud layer it is elementary to keep an eye on an overall view of the eco system Therefore the strategy has not changed The working group coordinates every 14 days and will continue to implement the chosen strategy - to provide a community app store from members to end customers In April of this year you have now announced that you are working together with OWL Maschinenbau on an ecosystem for industrial apps What is meant by this ‘ecosystem’ and how is this collaboration taking shape? OWL Maschinenbau sees itself as an input provider from the market Together with our implementation alliance the necessary developments for the provision of these app stores are coordinated Through our joint members we coordinate the next steps The ecosystem describes the complete path of the application from purchase in an app store to delivery on the store floor level with all the facets – such as payment legal – that are involved The collaboration focuses on common aspects of our two working groups and will continue iteratively What are the next steps? The next steps consist of the implementation and continuation of the concepts in the different app stores The current concept for vendorindependent app distribution now needs to go into detail at the app store vendors for implementation Building on the resulting insights a refinement of the concept will take place which will lead us to a first proof of concept for users with the common iteration loops The content of the proof of concept is to offer the elaborated fragments of the further technical working groups – for example Open Edge Computing – in the App Store You can think of it as making the connectors from the IIoT layers – edge and cloud – usable with the App Store based on open and preconceived solutions Hall 5 Booth 160 Ekrem Yigitdöl „The current concept for the providerindependent distribution of apps now needs to go into detail with the app store providers for implementation Building on the resulting insights there will be a refinement of the concept that will lead us to an initial proof of concept for users with the joint iteration loops “ Im ag e Uw e Nikl as W FM
