14 The Official Daily Tag 2 – Mittwoch 16 November 2022 Industrial Communication ❚ Data communication in transition These are the first applications for Single Pair Ethernet SPE The product portfolio for Single Pair Ethernet is now available and the exciting implementation phase is about to begin Which industries are currently leading the way and where will SPE be launched first? Single Pair Ethernet symbolizes a new type of networking a complete change of technology By switching from two or fourpair cabling to singlepair cabling space weight and costs can be reduced But even more important is that this leaner type of cabling makes it possible to implement endtoend communication – the digital infrastructure of tomorrow is being created Many companies from cable and connector manufacturers to semiconductor manufacturers have now developed and announced their product portfolios But how quickly can the technology now be brought to market? The introduction of Single Pair Ethernet was delayed by the industry’s general availability problems – in particular by the chip shortage – but now new concrete applications are finally emerging Where should SPE be deployed first? “SPE will play an important role in almost all areas of cabling in the future ” Ralf Peteranderl responsible for Research Development at Rosenberger is convinced “In the field of vehicle cabling SPE is already virtually indispensable and demand is rising rapidly We expect to see a similar trend in factory automation next but process and building automation will also benefit from this technology in the near future In factory automation many users are already starting to implement their first products ” says Peteranderl This means that we will probably see high takeup in this area within about two years Bianca Ulmschneider Product Manager DataVoice at Telegärtner reports a similar story Starting with automotive “with large sales volumes” SPE is now increasingly moving into the areas of process automation factory automation and building automation “As it now looks Single Pair Ethernet will be implemented somewhat more quickly in industrial cabling than in buildings ” is Ulmschneider’s assessment Nevertheless expectations regarding building automation are high overall mainly because the market is so large “With the IP protocol LED lamps switches sensors thermostats machine controllers or motors for blinds can be connected to the building management system via the local data network or the cloud Applicationspecific fieldbus systems are no longer needed and with them gateways complex interfaces and diverse protocols ” Where will market acceptance ramp up first? According to many experts the migration to Single Pair Ethernet will be quickest in those applications that do not use Ethernet technology today and where high data transmission rates are required “In the entire space around automotive Ethernet including all types of cars commercial vehicles and mobile machines the use of SPE is the most advanced ” explains Matthias Fritsche Senior Expert Ethernet at Harting “We currently see further potential applications in railroad technology the entire field of smart infrastructure e g traffic control technology and energy and in the future in automation from building infrastructure to manufacturing ” In automation there are already a large number of sensor network technologies and Industrial Ethernet systems Matthias Fritsche therefore assumes that SPE will increasingly be used here as another physical layer “SPE will first complement these systems and then have great potential in new applications The process industry is a good example of how SPE technology adapted with APL is already replacing analog systems and finding application in the market ” describes the SPE expert Widespread displacement of bus networks Tim Kindermann Product Manager at Phoenix Contact has also observed similar developments “Customers from many different industries are showing concrete interest in and see the added value of SPE in their applications On the one hand these are customers from the Process Automation sector and are specifically concerned with the implementation of SPE in their systems On the other hand we are also seeing growing interest from the area of factory automation where customers mainly focus on applications at the sensor and field level for SPE Here in particular there are many different bus systems that could be supplemented or replaced by Single Pair Ethernet in the future” How quickly market acceptance of SPE will actually grow remains to be seen However the arguments in favor of SPE are virtually undisputed They include Uniformity endtoend ethernet communication down to the field level avoidance of gateways cost savings across the entire system e g through reduced cabling maintenance and installation and low implementation costs Cable lengths of up to 1000 m numerous options to supply end devices with power in addition to data new possibilities to make devices and applications “smarter” through higher data rates remote control monitoring etc safety advantages through IPbased communication compared to conventional bus systems plus miniaturization and weight savings Matthias Fritsche Harting “In many development departments device concepts are being developed and tested with SPE However it is in the nature of things that only a small percentage of the ongoing developments are even visible today ” Horst Messerer Helukabel “In particular we expect the M12 hybrid connector compliant with IEC 63171-7 to be a great success an extra seven different codings have been provided to accommodate the use of hybrid SPEs in as many applications and industries as possible ” Tim Kindermann Phoenix Contact “Customers from many different sectors are showing concrete interest and recognizing the added value of SPE for their applications These are for example customers from process automation who are concretely looking at implementation ” Single Pair Ethernet is a technology that is suitable for a wide range of applications from process and factory automation to building automation and transportation Bild nirutft stock adobe com Product data bank celebrates its premiere To help support customers to implement Single Pair Ethernet right now members of the SPE Industrial Partner Netzwerk e Vhave built the “smartSPE product database” At www product singlepairethernet com you can find the needed building blocks for the SPE ecosystem from semiconductors to active network technology and devices
